When we hear the word “fats”, most of us have a negative connotation to it. However, in reality, without fat, we would all die. We need fats in our system as they are needed in crucial bodily functions. How about those fats which are responsible for our flab? Well, this is the time that we  should differentiate the good fats from the bad fats.

What are good fats?

Our body cannot produce essential fatty acids (linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid) which is why we need food to provide it for us. The essential fatty acids (EFA) help in formation of healthy cell membranes as well as its development. They are also proven to block the growth of breast cancer cells. Apart from that, EFA also help regulate proper adrenal and thyroid activity. They also aid in the brain and nervous system development and play a role in preventing blood clots responsible for cardiac attacks and stroke.

What are good fats.

Among the good fats that you should consider are the unsaturated fats. This is because these allow you to combat plenty of diseases. You can increase your unsaturated fat level replacing solid food with seafood and unsalted nuts rather than consuming red meat. The unsaturated fats are categorized in two, the polyunsaturated fats and the monounsaturated fats. The monounsaturated fats allow you to reduce the level of bad cholesterol and increase the good cholesterol in your body. To do this, start munching on fresh vegetables as well as including peanut, canola and olive oil in your diet. The polyunsaturated fats on the other hand reduce bad cholesterol. It can be found on vegetable oils, seeds and nuts. You can also get these from fatty fish that are good source of Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.

 What are bad fats?

Since we know what is good fat, it is our time to define bad fat which is the culprit of our ugly flabs and bulgy stomachs. Bad fats are saturated fats. They increase the level of bad cholesterol in the body. Saturated fats take in solid form such butter and margarine, ice cream, meat and cheese. Apart from unsaturated fats, trans fats are also responsible for our bulging figure. Trans fat reduces the good cholesterol level in our body. They can be gotten from processed foods such as fries and hamburgers.

Amidst the fact that not all fats are bad, there are still some surrounding myths about it. We have been diehard fans of “low-fat” meals believing that they won’t make us flab. However, we should educate ourselves and identify the good fat and bad fat. Among the myths about fat include:
