Prepare a bathroom sponge or any kind of sponge; make sure that one side is flat. Moreover, prepare toothpicks and plastic sheet.

Swirl the two colors together in their boundaries. Use the toothpick in swirling as the area where the colors meet will determine the length of the graduation. For a longer fade, make sure to mix a bigger area of the colors while a lesser fade means tinier mixture.
Dab your sponge directly to the mixture a few times. Thereafter, dab the sponge in to your nails in an upward and downward motion. Keep it moving slightly and lightly. You can repeat the dabbing as many as you desire but just make sure that the layer is dry before dabbing the polish again to avoid them from smudging the bottom layers.
Even out the surface by adding up a topcoat or more. The sponging makes the nails bumpy that is why it may require you to polish more than one topcoat. Clean up the mess around your nails by using a brush dipped in acetone or polish remover. For bigger bits, you may use a Q-tip dipped in remover while smaller areas can be done by smaller brush as you near in the cuticle areas.
